Where are they? The Monarchs are in steep decline and the link is Monsanto’s Round Up. There more on that story here, http://truth-out.org/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=7165:monsantos-roundup-ravaging-butterfly-populations-study-shows
It doesn’t stop there – Per the USDA ( United States Department of Agriculture ) over 90% of the soybean, and 70% of the corn crop is herbicide resistant. So, even the modified crops are requiring more and more herbicide. This is a problem.
We can make a difference. Demand that all products that contain GMO ingredients be labeled. Once you know, stop buying or buy less of those products until they change.
In a ruling that has significant ramifications for Monsanto and other plant care companies, Monsanto was found responsible for their pesticide harming a farmer using their product.

Bill Gates is an enigma to me. The Gates Foundation is doing some amazing thing in preventable disease efforts throughout the world and the foundation is funded by a promise of Bill’s to give away 95% of his wealth. That wealth was created and it still being created by Microsoft Corp., so the ability of the foundation to make incredible contributions in the future to various projects appears very strong. Here’s a link to a story and video of a recent interview with Bill Gates and some of the foundation’s activities – http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/newsmakers/bill-gates-using-money-save-lives-fix-u-235256838.html
I applaud many of his efforts, but I disagree strongly with his stance on GMO’s. It’s why he puzzles me so much. His stance on GMO’s is much like his Window’s product. It’s such a ‘cool’ technical thing he’s willing to overlook bugs and hiccups thinking the benefits outweigh the risks and we’ll figure it out with a large sample pool and then offer fixes. Instead of software and a pool of technology neophytes to hold sway over, it’s human lives being risked, the very ones he’s proclaiming to be saving. Please pay attention to GMO’s and the impact we are already seeing in humans and write the Gates Foundation and encourage them to look at alternatives to GMO’s.

The planting of round up resistant sugar beets and canola ( as well as cotton, corn, and soybean) is causing the spreading of the resistance to weeds like Kochia, a seven foot tall weed that handles drought conditions very well. This is forcing Monsanto and it’s rivals to modify their seeds even more with other genes to resist other weedkillers since Monsanto’s proprietary Round Up isn’t working on these plants.

Organic foods offer so many advantages that demand from consumers is creating new problems that will have to be overcome. We, as consumers, have to be aware that if we wish to be able to have these foods it’s important to know what concerns the growers are facing.
