NFC announces NO GMO Kosher Policy
NFC, a leading certifier of Kosher foods, has instituted a NO GMO Policy. “While according to the strict letter of Kosher food law, a GMO food ingredient is not prohibited, it certainly is not natural,” says Rabbi Reuven Flamer, Founder and Director of NFC. Is GMO corn nutritionally dead?
A story we’ll be following very closely is this from naturalnews.com. http://www.naturalnews.com/039864_GMO_corn_nutrients_minerals.html
This is a story we all need to follow for our health.
The addictiveness of junk food! Check out this excerpt from a new book!
Unhealthy and highly processed junk food. It’s everywhere since it seems so innocuous and simple. However, the truth is that these snacks are quite ominous and not so simple. We understand this and it’s one of the driving motivations for our creativity in coming up with new snacks that are healthier and lightly processed, if at all. Part of the problem in the proliferation of these snacks that are undermining the health of consumer who is purchasing them is the lack of knowledge or awareness to these concerns. That’s about to change!
The following article adapted from “Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us,” which will be published by Random House this month. This excerpt should be enough to make sure that this book is on your reading list for this year. Here’s the link from the NY Times, http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/24/magazine/the-extraordinary-science-of-junk-food.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1&

Grocery Chain takes labeling of GMO’s into own hands
The fight to label GM foods isn’t over and it looks like the grocery retailers might force the issue. The Hiller’s grocery chain in Detroit is labeling all of the foods in their stores to help consumers know if it is Non-GMO or not. We like this approach and wanted to share this story. http://www.abc-7.com/story/21572988/grocery-chain-labeling-non-gmo-foods#.UT4ndBmGE7A

Eat better, remove these items from your diet!
We found this story on Yahoo today and wanted to link to it since it offered very reasonable reasons for avoiding certain types of foods, food additives, etc. that we feel very strongly about as well. In some cases it’s not just the food itself but the process in which is grown which often times is very detrimental to the environment as well as the likelihood of being detrimental to you. By removing these 14 items from your diet you stand a great chance of improving your health this year. http://health.yahoo.net/articles/nutrition/photos/14-foods-you-should-cut-your-diet#0
Further indications that corn syrup negatively impacts the body
We have been concerned about corn syrup for a variety of reasons at SunRidge Farms for many, many years. It’s such a staple sweetener in the food industry due to it’s low cost and availability but it’s negative health impact is becoming clearer. The most recent study on this sweetener indicates that the brain does not recognize that we are eating by telling us we are now ‘full’. The impact on weight and other health concerns can be severe with excessive sugar in the body and the high potential for over eating. Sweet is something we crave as humans but we can certainly use more natural forms of sugar to achieve this. In doing so you’ll find that your craving is satisfied with less and far more healthy amounts. As with my own kids, you’ll find them quickly gravitating to the better foods once they are exposed to this. Try serving Organic Chocolate Almonds in your child’s lunchbox as a treat versus any number of commercially produced packaged treats and you’ll find other kids wanting to have the same. My sixth grader has done just that and his class has cut back on junk food for lunch as parents have switched up due to the influence of one child. Why?? The kids are asking for better snacks because they do taste better and fill their stomachs with less. Order these almonds now, https://www.sunridgefarms.com/products/view.php?ID=868093 and see for yourself.
